Not sure how to apply the circle, triangle, diamond clue.

Got the answer from the walkthrough but still not clear why that was the answer.

in first scene is a sign that says:
circle = 1, triangle = 2, square = 3
so two triangles = 4, circle + square = 4, two squares = 6

* square = diamond
