Pi Day Challenge 2010

Pi Day Challenge 2010 is a new brain teaser puzzle game made for Pi Day. "The Pi Day Challenge is a series of puzzles that are logic-based. A team of logicians adapted or created these puzzles – some require research, some require mathematics, some require pure savvy. Keep in mind that for some puzzles, finding out what you are supposed to do is part of the puzzle. Some of the puzzles might be frustrating; be resourceful (you are on the internet). However, try to solve the puzzles on your own. Be advised: when you solve a puzzle, you will know that it is time to move on." Can you able to solve all 28 levels? Good luck and have fun! Click the clock. It might freeze; just restart by clicking on the "27" button at the top.

    28) Balloons and a weigh scale appears. I finished this, but don't fully understand this, so I can't explain that clearly.

    1. Weigh the 1st group of 4, 2nd group and 3rd group.

    2. Keep doing this until you get two balanced sets, and one unbalanced.

    3. This means that the pair on the heavier side are both heavier, or the pair on the light side are both lighter.

    4. Weigh one of your suspects with 3 other normal ones. This should reveal the culprits and their weight.

Do this twice. Click the clock

  2. aquashock, the dog's tongue sticks out.:-D

Unfortunately I won't be able to finish this game. Still stuck on 21 with the slider not showing 201, it jumps from 200 to 202 no matter how slowly I move it.

  3. @cricketer,
In case you come back here, there is a way for you to be able to try the levels past 21 even if you are unable to put the slider on 201.

If you after you solve a level click several times on the clock realy fast, you jump a few levels forward. So, just solve level 20 and try to jump past level 21.

  4. Thanks Ellie, I'll try that. I'll update flash & try another browser as well, to see if that helps.

And if possible, try to ignore the exact answers. The game is getting older but is still a great one. Enjoy it the way it should be.

  12. Level 28 explanation:

2 zodiacs weigh differently than the other 10. The 2 are either both heavier or both lighter than the other 10.

Within 4 weighings of the scale, you must determine which 2 weigh differently and whether they weigh more or less than the other 10. And, you must do this twice in a row.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Swimgirl,
Took me a while to get to level 13. But if you're still here or come back.
First click all the colored blocks away.
Then guitar strings are from left to right in this picture EADGBE. In the alphabet those are the numbers 514725.
So on the first string (left one) 5 colored blocks.
    second - 1
    third - 4
    fourth - 7
    fifth - 2
    sixth - 5
Then click the black guitar pick on the left side.

  24. I think the most fun I had was with level 27, the ipods. Once I figured out the pattern of addition (clicking next on an ipod adds 1 to it's display, 2 to the one to the right, 3 to the next, looping back), I made an Excel spreadsheet that could predict the display for a given sequence of inputs. I played with that a while, but didn't find any winning combinations changing things manually.

Then I made all the inputs random numbers from 0 to 3 (representing a next click on each ipod from left to right), and re-calculated the page until it found 3, 1, and 4 on the first, third and fourth display (I wasn't sure what the 2nd symbol needed to be, so I just tested for pi). I found some winning sequences, but wondered if Excel could do some of the work with the Goal Seek feature. I made a formula cell that would be 1 if a solution was found, 0 otherwise, and had Excel seek to make that 1 by changing a dummy value. Excel finds new random numbers anytime something changes, so for every time it adjusted the dummy value, it evaluated a new set of random numbers. It found many possible winning sequences, but it seemed like 13 was the minimum number of moves needed to win.

So then I wrote a VBA script that would cycle through every possible combination of 13 different inputs (4 different choices for each 13 moves, for 4^13, or 67,108,864 possible combinations). I evaluated the displays just as I did in the spread sheet, again looking for 3 14 on the displays. I found 34,848 combinations of 13 moves that would satisfy the winning condition, the first and simplest being the one offered here: 6 x 1st, 5 x 2nd, and 2 x 3rd. But I didn't find any winning combinations under 13 moves.

There may be an elegant way to prove the minimum number of moves needed, more so than an exhaustive numeric search, but I will leave to someone else for now!
