There are two sets of symbols: the four "basic elements" and more complex elements. As you'll recall, the four "basic elements" are earth, water, air and fire (the fifth element is love, in case you couldn't figure that out from the movie). Each of the four basic elements is represented by one of four triangle. They are:

Down-Strike = Earth (amber)
Down = Water (green)
Up-Strike = Air (blue)
Up = Fire (red)

I counted eighteen complex elements. I'm not going to try to describe their symbols (I'll let you handle that), but I will list their names and atomic weights.

Atomic Weight / Name as it appears in the game
05 Boron
12 Magnesium
14 Silicon
15 Phosphorus
16 Sulphur
19 Potassium
26 Iron Mars
29 Copper Venus
30 Zinc
33 Arsenic
47 Silver Moon
50 Tin Jupiter
51 Antimony
78 Platinum
79 Gold Sun
80 Mercury Mercury
82 Lead Saturn
83 Bismuth

So here's my hypothesis:
The complex element symbols on the four cards tell you which numbers to use and the basic elements tell you how to manipulate them (i.e. add, subtract, multiply, divide). My hypothesis states that if you manipulate the numbers correctly, the result will be the number listed in the gray box on the right-hand side.

What still puzzles me is why the planet names are included, but this might just be a red herring.

In the outer room with the triangles and buttons, the order of the elements is reversed so the first symbol shown is silicon - number 18. If you number the others accordingly you will find the last seven are the ones on the body and the two you are given are 7 and 5 which work out right. The cards then give the total of the four elements displayed. The triangles seem to be irrelevant. How this solves the outer room puzzle, I don't know! Any other ideas?

Outside house puzzle solved!
If you see the cards, each symbol is in 1 o 2 as much card with different element symbols.
Thus, after look ALL the cards, I had the right combination:
1->Earth-> SULPHUR
2->Air-> BISMUTH
3->Fire-> SUN
4->Water-> MOON
5->Earth+Water-> ANTIMONY
6->Air+Fire-> POTASIUM

Click the down button, and this unlocks the black book that have these numbers:
1-2-1-3-1-4-5-6-7
5-3-8-9-10-11-7-12

Now stuck :(

I know how to solve the orrery and open the gold book. It wasn't much help, but if anyone is interested, let me know. I also know what elements/planets each symbol stands for.

By using algebra on the cards, here are the values for each symbol. If you use these, the sum of each symbol on the cards will always match the total on the right.

1 Gold/Sun
2 Silver/Moon
3 Iron/Mars
4 Mercury
5 Tin/Jupiter
6 Copper/Venus
7 Lead/Saturn
8 Magnesium
9 Phosphorus
10 Sulfur
11 Potassium
12 Zinc
13 Arsenic
14 Antimony
15 Platinum
16 Bismuth
17 Boron
18 Silicon

Finally figured this thing out. The only thing I don't really understand is Hecbator's posted explanation to the outside puzzle. I don't understand how the earth, air, fire, and water symbols correspond to elements.

Anyway,

By following the steps previously posted you should be able to get all the books open. One of the clues states that the code to the door is written in the books in code based on the numbers of the symbols. And, that the color of the spine is a hint to the code in each book.

I have already listed the numbers corresponding to the elements in a previous post. The books will reveal the LETTERS that correspond to each element. We have already been given two. One clue said that the letter E could take the place of 7, Saturn, Lead, etc. We also know from the list next to the wooden man that the letter C, and the number 5 correspond to Tin/Jupiter.

The colors of the spines also correspond to specific elements and numbers, etc. You can find these from the buttons on the orrery and the corresponding astrological symbols on the wooden man. Again, two were given to you already.

The gold book has the symbol corresponding to gold or the sun, whose related number is 1.
Look at the notes on the right side of the page. There are eight lines and eight symbols. The first line goes with the first symbol, the second line goes with the second symbol, etc. Since the book was gold and it's number is 1, the 1st letter of the first word is the letter that each symbol corresponds to. Silver=V, Moon=L, Mercury=N, etc.

The silver book corresponds to the number 2, so each symbol in that book is revealed by the 1st letter of the 2nd word on each line.

The red book is iron, so 3 is the corresponding number. Each symbol in that book is revealed by the 1st letter of the 3rd word on the corresponding line. (Keep in mind you will have to skip lines for rows that don't have symbols. Thus, every line with symbols on it will have 3 words.)

The gray book with Mercury on it is represented by the number 4. Each symbol in this book is revealed by finding the 4th letter in each word that is at least 4 letters long. There are 5 headlines and 5 rows of symbols, one headline for each.

By following these clues you will get the following:

1. Gold = A
2. Silver = V
3. Iron = L
4. Mercury = N
5. Tin = C
6. Copper = H
7. Lead = E
8. Magnesium = O
9. Phosphorus = I
10. Sulfur = S
11. Potassium = T
12. Zinc = R
13. Arsenic = U

The black book contains numbers. Simply replace the numbers with the corresponding letters, enter the code into the door and click on the doorknob.

1 2 1 3 1 4 5 6 7 = AVALANCHE
5 3 8 9 10 11 7 12 = CLOISTER

As much as I feel like I accomplished something great in figuring this out, I would feel a lot better if I understood how to get the answer to the outside puzzle. If someone can explain it to me, I would greatly appreciate it.
