so today the task is balancing things. glad it's not my checkbook i have to balance.

for number 3 :
place the purple ones in upper right corner, the green ones left under, light blue in left upper corner, yellow ones in the middle and the dark blue on the right side under the purple ones.
Hope this makes sense... lol

Very easy, in and out in 5 minutes.

for number 2, is it defective when it's too heavy or when it's too light? I don't understand that one

       Anonymous  4/26/10, 10:15 AM

Truus, it means one is heavier or lighter (afwijkend; zwaarder of lichter).

Oke bedankt small-tool!
So if I'm looking for the heavier one in puzzle 1, does that mean for number 2 it's the lighter one?

       Anonymous  4/26/10, 10:29 AM

Truus, it can be heavier it can be lighter, you can't know and you don't have to know. All you have to find out is wich one is abnormal.

I really don't understand the balance puzzle can you make a walktrough please

       Anonymous  4/26/10, 10:38 AM

diane, the first one or the second one or both?

both please

so that goes for 2, and for 1 I need to find the heavier one.
That's weird, cause I really thought I found the heavier one on 1 just now, but it was wrong.
Thanks for explaining small-tool, I hope I can do this, lol
I'll go and give it another try....

I solved number 1 !!
onto 2 now...

The first puzzle
Start with 3 on one side and 3 on the other.
let's say 123 against 456.

1) If they keep in balance then the heavier on is in 789
do 7 against 8
If 7 goes down it's 7
If 8 goes doen it's 8
If they balance it's 9

2) If 123 goes down it's in 123
so you do the same with 123 as we did in the previous example with 789

3) If 456 goes down it's in 456
so you do the same with 456 as we did in the previous example with 789

The second puzzle takes more time to write.

ok I figure out the 1 and got it ,tks working on the second

THE SECOND PUZZLE

First start with 4 on one side and 4 on the other.

1a) If they keep in balance the deviant one is in the other 4.

Let's say 1234 against 5678, so it must be in 9 10 11 12
Now take three good ones and three bad ones
Let's say 123 against 9 10 11

2a) If they keep in balance the deviant one is 12 and you're ready.

2b) If 123 (the good ones) goes down it's in 9 10 11 and it's lighter.

2c) If 123 (the good ones) goes up it's in 9 10 11 and it's heavier.

for 2b and 2c the method is the same: Put one against another.

Let's say 9 against 10

3b) (the deviant one is lighter) 9 against 10
If 9 goes up, it's 9
If 10 goes up, it's 10
If they balance it's 11

3c) (the deviant one is heavier) 9 against 10
If 9 goes up it's 10
If 10 goes up it's 9
If they balance it's 11

Now 1b) 1234 against 5678 and they do not balance (so you know 9 10 11 12 are good).

Let's say 1234 goes down and 5678 goes up (now you know one weight in 1234 is too heavy OR one in 5678 is too light).
Now only take one that's maybe too light (let's say 5) and two that are maybe too heavy (let's say 1 and 2) all on side.
On the other side two that are maybe too heavy (3 and 4) and one that's good (let's say 9)

So 125 against 349

2a) They balance, so 125 and 349 are good and the deviant one is in 6, 7 or 8 AND it's too light.
and step 3) is now 6 against 7
If 6 goes up it's 6
If 7 goes up it's 7
If the balance it's 8

2b) They don't balance 349 goes down (so 6, 7 and 8 are good AND 1 and 2 are not too heavy).
But we don't know if 3 or 4 is too heavy or 5 is too light.

3) We do 3 against 4 and if they balance we know it is 5 that is too light
If 3 goes down it's 3
If 4 goes down it's 4

2c) They don't balance,125 goes down (so 6, 7 and 8 are good AND 3 and 4 are good and 9 of course but we allready knew that)
We also knew allready that 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 was too heavy and now we know it's not 3 or 4.

3) So all we have to do is 1 against 2 and the one that goes down is too heavy.

If on 1b) 1234 against 5678 the other ones go down. So not 1234 but 5678 everything goes the same way but now on step 2) 561 against 789 (The system is the same take one two possible too heavy weights on each side and on one side a good weight and on the other a possible too light weight.

Hope you can understand, it would be easier with some pictures, but I don't know how to do that.

If I understand correctly, does that mean all weights are equal, only 1 is defective?
Because I thought the numbers stood for their weight. Like for instance if you place 1 and 10 on one side, that makes a total of 11. But I was wrong thinking that??

       Anonymous  4/26/10, 11:57 AM

You're right Truus, you were wrong.

lol small-tool!!

Now I know, I will give it another try tomorrow, when my head is clear again :))

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

HOPE THIS IS A BETTER EXPLANATION

? = unknown
G = Good
H = (Maybe) Heavy
L = (Maybe) Light

1) ???? - ???? and ???? on the side

1a) They balance so it is GGGG - GGGG and ???? on the side

2) GGG - ??? and GGGGG? on the side

2a) They balance so it is the ? on the side and you're ready

2b) GGG goes down so one of ??? is L and on the side it's GGGGGG

3) ? - ? and on the side GGGGGGGGG?
They balance; it's the ? on the side
If they don't balance the ? that goes up is the one and is L

2c) ??? goes down so one of ??? is H and on the side it's GGGGGG

3) ? - ? and on the side GGGGGGGGG?
They balance; it's the ? on the side
If they don't balance the ? that goes down is the one and is H

1b) They don't balance so it is GGGG on the side
and HHHH - LLLL (one of them is H or L).

2) HHG - HHL and on the side LLLGGG

2a) HHG goes down so on the side it's GGGGGG (The L wasn't one of the 3 on the side)
and on the scale it's HHG-GGL (the H on the right scale can't be H if it goes up)

3) H - H and on the side GGGGGGGGGL
3a) they balance so it's G - G and on the side all good except the L and that's the one.
3b) The left or the right H goes down and that's the one.

2) HHG - HHL and on the side LLLGGG

2b) HHL goes down so on the side it's GGGGGG (The L wasn't one of the 3 on the side)
and on the scale it's GGG-HHG (The L on the right side couldn't be L cause that side went down)
So all that's left is two H and we can do the same step 3 here

I found this game easy, which is nice after struggling with the match stick ones in the last game in this series.

I am amazed at @small-tool's explanation! Wow! I wouldn't have written a walkthrough for this on a bet. Great job!

o.k. I played it again today and totally understood it this time, even ended up nr 10 on high score!
Have you ever thought of a teaching career, small-tool?
Nogmaals bedankt voor al je geduld en uitleg :))

I fond the game easy and enjoyable this time.
Wow @small-tool!! You do have a lot of patience to write all of that. Thanks!
