Ah, played again. It's kind of trial and error to find out wich button pushes the square where.
But I'm pretty sure I didn't do the right order the first time I played and still the ladder came down!?

Please help with the FIRST room. Feeling stupid here. I have candle, skull, cross. I've seen the book, I've pulled the lever. What now? Something about the picture, but can't do anything with it.

Behind the green book (in the scene with the picture) is a button, click it and then you can put the cross on the right side of the wall.
Then click the cross and then the picture goes down.
Oops, after clicking the cross you also have to click the picture.
Ah, that was it!
