For the 5 symbol puzzle you need to select the correct symbol for the one marked 1. Then you will be shown #2, and have to pick its symbol. I think you need to find the book on the shelf and look at the three other symbols beforeit works.

the green gem is in a locked box right scene at opening of the log - the key is in the house on a shelf I think
