I did it! No language barrier in the game (just recognize symbols and transfer the image elsewhere).

I thought the dog statue clue is the paper with the big '8' on it.
Unfortunately I don't know how to set it yet...

Ahhh! Missed that, thanks Brett. The clue note will automagically transform once the button sequence on the cylinder has been entered correctly.

Couldn't get much out of it with Google...however excite.co.jp translated it to (slightly amended)
"I'll complete a visit by a bow at the end."
(礼 = bow (noun), not "fee" as excite mistranslated it)

I don't get ladder hint for cilinder, if cilinder is octagon thing with 4 buttons next to the paper hint with good and bad sign
I can see how the symbol for 8 relates to the statue puzzle but it's not working for me. Haven't found a piece of paper with an 8 on it. Guess that's the problem.
Where's the clue for the buttons revealed after putting stick in thing?
Urban - the writing on the wall next to the ladder has symbols which relate to those on the cylinder. Turn the cylinder round and press the buttons in the order given on the wall.
Ah, found clue for buttons - zoom in on stick in inventory.

Doh! The matchbox isn't for the gate. It's for the enormous red pillars which I'd not noticed somehow...

Where's the hint for the right bottom of the red gate?
After you open the compartment under the dog, take the matchbox but also lift the top of the (green?) box. Picture shows hint for bottom of gate - make colors the same as in pic
