Excellent, one of the best Asylums in a long time.

I am just going to resign myself to the fact that I will never be able to figure you people out. SD actually shows some imagination and initiative for a change, puts out something pretty creative and complex as a new twist to his otherwise identical games, and it only gets 3.5 stars. I would have given it 5 if the scroll you buy from the vendor wasn't actually identical to the map you had already purchased. There were a couple other flaky things, but not anything that affected game play.

I was worried about having to backtrack once I got the orb jar as well, but in order to finish the game you will have to be going back and forth across these rooms several times anyway, so it didn't actually end up being an extra trip. The only thing that I would liked to have seen was that once you bought the crystal ball from the vendor you should be able to see all the areas on the map, not just the section you are in, and be able to portal to any of the rooms like normal. As it is, the crystal ball didn't actually save you much time and effort. But again...that didn't affect game play a whole lot.

So yeah, I thought it was pretty fun and was very refreshed to see SD stretching himself a bit. Still needs more attention in beta testing, but a very solid 4 star game IMO.

Incredibly frustrating, but epic, logical and - as far as I can tell - bug free.

The star portals link the following rooms:

green - links rooms Z and AU
blue - links G and P
yellow - links B and AH
purple (NOT blue) is in AA - takes you to shop

The gems can be placed in the following rooms (slots are only visible when all seven gems have been collected):

yellow - AN
purple (looked pink to me) - P
blue - E
red - J
orange - AG
green - AK
white - X

Exhausting, but ultimately satisfying game. Please check room and colour before posting hints! Thanks to Selfdefiant for another challenging, infuriating, but fiendishly excellent game and thanks to the rest of you for all the hints!

That was excellent!

It took me a while to get my head around it so I took a break yesterday and continued with it today.

I only peeked in here once and once I'd found the holy water, everything started to fit into place.

purple gem goes in P
orange gem goes in AG
blue gem goes in E
red gem goes in J
green gem goes in AL
white gem goes in X
yellow gem goes in AN

Green gem goes in AK, not AL, otherwise correct.

The 4 areas are:

Rooms A - N (yellow portal in B, blue portal in G)

Rooms AA - AM (yellow portal in AH, purple portal = shop in AA)

Rooms O - Z (blue portal in P, green portal in Z)

Rooms AN - AX (green portal in AU)

Obviously the above room references are not much use if you do not yet have the map.

Explore any rooms you can access (there are not many) until you find the rose coloured glasses. Try these in each room until you find an 8 letter code which, when entered on a nearby piano, opens the yellow star portal in an adjacent room. Travel through this portal and explore the new area. In this area you will (eventually!) find the sacred jar for the orbs and the wand. The purple portal which takes you to the shop where you can buy the map .etc... can be magically opened in the bottom leftmost room (empty swimming pool). Make sure you have collected at least 25 orbs first!

If you don't yet have 50 orbs, you can just buy the map for 25. If you buy the scroll, you additionally have the ability to write / make notes on the map. That is why two items (map and scroll) are shown in the inventory. A bit confusing, but not really a problem. Clicking either shows you the map.

Great game. Really enjoyed it.

Thanks for another great game SD.
Minor bug: The color chooser box disappeared halfway into the game (I had both map and scroll), but it came back after reloading. Besides that, a perfect game. One of your best.

Can anyone tell me where to find the yellow gem? I have been searching for hours!

The yellow gem was from the anagram box in room AM (upper right room of the second area after going through yellow star portal).

Out fuuuu... your score is 392820

Has anyone been able to do a written walkthrough? Thx

lol reading through the comments and don't see why so many complaining. This game was awesome! Self Defiant has you spoiled by having maps readily available. Make notes and draw your own maps until you find one. Self Defiant's older games had either maps without letters or no maps at all. I found it was part of the fun to draw my own.
Self Defiant please don't let the negative comments deter you from making more like this one. It was awesome!

Thank you SD :) I enjoyed this game so much....the portals, the "sectional" map for each portal was fun and I liked the challenge! I love all your games, but I have a special affinity for the Asylums for various reasons that really are not important but I will say this: I have taken up residence in various locations ;)

Thanks again for a great game!!!!

What an awful game! SD games are pretty bad lately (long and complicated) but this takes the biscuit! What is the point of an orb when the map is in pieces and you don't know where each portal is? I had to go through each room in sequence to find the blooming portals! And then they still did not make sense. Of course if you want to use a walkthrough all the time, SD games are passable...

Does anyone know where the door for the purple key is? I'd greatly appreciate it.
