The book tells you what order the numbers should be in. You then have to note the order of the blanks before putting the numbers in. Match the proper 1st number to the proper 1st blank, and so on...
I found it difficult to place the two sides of the ladder. One is just right of the window and the 2nd to the right of that.
I did, too. And now I only have 2 rungs.
The big logs are used as rungs too. Seems very random. I think I am missing 1 rung.

Just found what I think is my last rung by the barrels, but I can't place it.
Have you used the thing that looks like it might be either a torch or a scraper?

Sorry! The scraper thing is used to break the glass in the right hand bedroom, behind which is a yellow ball. I can't place the final rung either.
Bug. Peeked at the VWT. I placed one log early on as a rung and it turned into a regular rung. I'm left with one regular rung in my inventory which I now can't place. So you need to place all the regular rungs before placing the logs. You can then complete the ladder.

I used the vase to break the glass. Not worth restarting anyway.
I have 2 flat looking sticks in my inventory but I can't place them on the ladder. I found a mop which I lit on fire and then doused with water. Now I have a burnt mop with smoke billowing out. I think it's for the bee hive once you can climb the ladder. I haven't used the scraper yet.
Yes Kitty. My fault for suggesting using the logs. They need to go in last. :-(

The vase is used to break the picture frame, the scraper is used to remove the bee hive after smoking it with the burnt broom
got the log bug also, give up as a bad game,
backwards inventory bar really annoying me anyway.
