the letter is obtained after using the ornaments on the tree, the tree will not accept the ornaments until the light is on though, in order to turn the light on, use the light bulb on it.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH

Blue on floor in opening scene
Red behind tree in opening scene
Green next to chest of drawers
Yellow behind yellow pillow
Get light bulb from under hutch
Place it in lamp behind ottoman in opening scene
Turn on lamp at base if not already on
Note color pattern
Place ornaments on tree in that pattern
Ornaments will light up numbers
Use these numbers for code on right nightstand
Get poem from nightstand
Read down first column of poem
Enter this code on drawer of hutch
Open drawer for key
Use key on main door and you are out!
